War Clubs

Native American warrior societies often handed down stories of battlefield victories and conquests using vivid expressions consisting of oral tradition and artistry. Visual depictions were represented by both color and design.  Feathers, beads and painted designs often decorated their weapons. This adornment was thought to evoke mystical powers that would protect the warrior from harm during battle and then bring him home safely.

Before European influences, most war clubs and battle axes were constructed from wood and stone. After contact with the new settlers, steel and iron weapons prevailed. Nowadays, war clubs are used for ceremony and decoration.  Authentic and contemporary replicas are sought after by collectors worldwide.  Each one of our war clubs is one of a kind. They are unique creations reminiscent of the old style stone and wood.  Come with us back to the old days, walk with us and know the old ways.

A Brief Description Of The Materials Used To Make War Clubs     

The stones used in the war clubs are from river banks and some of them are spectacular. The leather on the war clubs, talking sticks, etc. is elk skin or deerskin. The fur may include rabbit, raccoon, mink, ermine, fox, coyote, etc., as well as recycled fur. The feathers are all legal and may include parrot, turkey, pheasant, chicken, duck, dove, etc. Some feathers have hand painted designs. The shells may include abalone, clam, snail, oyster, limpet, mussel, etc. The beads are of glass, pearl, dentalia, bone, brass, copper, or semi-precious stones.  The wood is madrone, alder, cedar, juniper, fur, pine, manzanita, etc., and much of it has come to us in the form of driftwood. Sometimes horse hair is used.
